Gotta’ love the fact that HuffPo couldn’t find a black writer/columnist to put together this piece. While I’d take nothing away from the accomplishments of those featured, this could’ve been an opportunity to enlighten people about the first governor of California, Pio Pico, or to teach them about the origin of the very name California, based upon Queen Calafia, the black goddess.

García Ordóñez de Montalvo, the author of the fictional novel Las Sergas de Esplandián wrote, “Know that on the right hand from the Indies exists an island called California very close to a side of the Earthly Paradise; and it was populated by black women, without any man existing there, because they lived in the way of the Amazons.”

But, of course, this post was not about bridging relationships between Californians or creating mutual respect; it was a self-serving, “Eh, I guess we can do *something*” post that appears handed off to the only writer who’d take the assignment. How irresponsible and downright ugly of HuffPo! I also note that this article says nothing about Biddy Mason. Grrr.

The eloquence and diplomacy expressed in this letter is proof positive that not only have black people always endeavored to educate themselves; it also proves that money is not a requirement for education. Sheer human will is the only prerequisite.

To My Old Master.
